My first “beach read” of the summer, my first time reading Emily Henry and I loved it! My sister recommended this book to me when I told her I was looking for some fun beach reads this summer. I absolutely categorize my reading by season: Winter = heavy dense reading; Spring = something mid-range in difficulty; Summer = keep it light and fun, maybe a not too scary murder mystery; Fall = give me something either scholastic or witchy.
This book was way sexier than I was expecting–quite titillating indeed. I blush as I write that. Later this summer I’ll have to read her book called “Beach Read”!
The lead character, Daphne, is a total book nerd and she works as a children’s librarian–already she is living my fantasy life. Daphne grew up moving a lot with her single mother, and while my parents are still together I definitely identified with the “moving around a lot” part. I find it so enjoyable when I identify with a lead character, particularly when it’s a light read, sometimes identifying with the lead character in say a Jonathan Franzen novel can feel a bit…unsettling. Back to Daphne and “Funny Story”: this book is good and it surprised me. It starts out with a break up (no spoiler there) which is sad, but then it quickly takes a fun turn as Daphne moves in with Miles, the ex of the woman her fiance left her for! The “funny story” is how Daphne and Miles’ relationship unfolds–this is also the surprisingly sexy part. The way that Daphne finds herself through the course of the book is fresh and empowering, making this light read definitely worth your while–and it won’t take very much of your time, I read it in a week.
This book gets a 5 out of 5 rating from me–in the beach read category. The chapters are short, the story is summery and fresh.
